The Big Five – Maasai Mara is home to Africa’s famous Big Five: lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes, and rhinos. Lions are especially common, and you may spot prides resting or hunting on the plains.
Cheetahs – The park is one of the best places in Africa to see cheetahs in action, especially during the Great Migration when prey is plentiful.
Wildebeest – Over 1.5 million wildebeest migrate to the Mara each year from the Serengeti in search of fresh grazing, creating a spectacular sight, particularly during river crossings.
Zebras – Often found alongside wildebeest, zebras are plentiful in the Mara, and their striking black-and-white stripes create iconic images of African wildlife.
Giraffes – Towering giraffes can be seen gracefully grazing on the acacia trees scattered across the plains.
Hyenas and Jackals – These scavengers are common in the park and are often seen following predators to feed on leftovers or hunting in packs.
Hippos and Crocodiles – The Mara River is home to many hippos and crocodiles, especially during the Great Migration when wildebeest attempt to cross the river, making for dramatic wildlife scenes.
Gazelles and Antelopes – Numerous species of gazelles and antelopes, such as Thompson’s gazelle, impalas, and topi, roam the savannah, offering ample food for predators.
Birdlife – With over 500 bird species, Maasai Mara is a haven for bird watchers. Look out for ostriches, vultures, eagles, herons, and colorful species like the lilac-breasted roller.
